Maths, physics not a must for engineering: AICTE
CHENNAI: In a controversial move that would impact the quality of engineers produced in the country, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has made mathematics and physics at Class XII-level optional to get admissions to BE and BTech courses from 2021-22.
As of now, Class XII-level maths and physics subjects are compulsory for admissions to undergraduate programmes in engineering and technology.
The approval process handbook for 2021-22 released by the AICTE has changed the eligibility criteria for UG admissions. Now, students have to pass 10+2 with any of the three following subjects — physics /mathematics / chemistry / computer science / electronics / information technology / biology / informatics practices / biotechnology / technical vocational subject / agriculture / engineering graphics / business studies / entrepreneurship.
Candidates have to score 45% marks (for reserved category students it is 40% marks) in the above subjects taken together. “The universities will offer suitable bridge courses such as mathematics, physics, engineering drawing for students coming from diverse backgrounds to achieve learning outcomes of the programme,” AICTE said in its handbook.
The move has come under strong criticism from academicians who said mathematics is a foundation for all engineering degrees. “Bridge course is a remedial course for those who are weak in Mathematics. It cannot replace higher secondary-level mathematics, which is a foundational course," said S Vaidhyasubramaniam, vice-chancellor of SASTRA university.
这一举措◤遭到了院士们的强烈批评，他们称数学是基础。“ 桥梁课程是为数学较差的学生开设的补习班，无法取代作为基础课程的高等中学数学，”SASTRA大学副校长S Vaidhyasubramaniam说道。
The AICTE's model curriculum for engineering programmes has Mathematics running up to fifth semester in almost all programmes. “Mathematics and physics have to be compulsory for all engineering courses,” he added.
Stupidity taken to advanced level. Is any of the children of bureaucrats or politicians affected by this requirement for mathematics and physics? Otherwise no one can see why this change. Mathematics and Physics are the foundation for Engineering studies.
why not give them engineering degrees without any subjects :)
Even in developed countries ......maths is a must for engineering
Students who are poor in Maths and Physics lacks analytical abilities. They will be qualitatively poor engineers. In fact, Maths and Physics curriculum needs to be made rigorous.
I am not surprised. Most kids nowadays only want to become Tiktokers, Youtubers or dancers/singers. We will soon become a nation of singing dancing troupes. This is a first major step in that direction.
I mean anything is possible under Modi.
also make biology optional for medicine.
engineering not possible without maths and physics
If non MBBS doctors can perform surgery then engineers don't need maths and physics.
What this Modi go nment is doing.. ruining all the things..A engineer without Maths
Soon " cow exam" qualifiers will be able to sit for engineering exam. Those engineers will be able to make bridges, roads and skyscrapers with mix of just two ingredients cow dung patty and gaumutra. Incredible India!!!
AICTE decision makers must be full of Liberal arts and law stalwarts.
I think at least Mathematics should have been made compulsory for any engineering course. Depending on the branch of degree Physics may not be necessary
Better collect money and issue degree certificates. Why waste effort for students to go institutions and attend acadamia classes? In fact How many competant engineers are in our go nment services and drawing huge salaries sitting idle?
THEN WHAT WILL BE MANDATORY, ANDH BHAKTHS?
